Bourbon Review: American Honey

Before I begin, I need to thank the MULLYs (Jim and Tomoko) for bringing this one to me. It was an unexpected present during their recent trip to Korea. That being said, let’s get to reviewing today’s beverage: Wild Turkey’s American Honey.

American Honey is of course the entry by bourbon maker Wild Turkey into the flavored booze department. It clocks in at 35.5% ABV, making it on the weaker side of things for a bourbon, but on par with other flavored alcohols. The bottle is beautifully crafted with the familiar turkey imprinted on the back side of the bottle. When lit, the golden alcohol beautifully contrasts with the image, creating a unique effect.

As with coffee, I usually like my whiskeys neat or with a little ice. I’m not one for flavors. When Jim heard this, he became a little nervous about his beverage selection, but I assured him, after experimenting this past summer with several honeys, I knew I’d like this one.

Upon opening the bottle, I noticed something a little different. Rather than a strong bourbon smell dashed with honey, it was just the opposite. All I could smell was citrus and a little hint of bourbon. I was really caught off guard with that. From that moment on, I knew what I had in my hand would be different.

American Honey makes three drink recommendations: neat, with soda, and with ginger ale. Being a purist, I had it neat and found it quite nice. Those that don’t like sour mash whiskeys, will probably like this honey, as it tastes nothing like bourbon. It is very sweet and glides over the palate easily.

Unlike the other honeys I’ve had, I really enjoyed this one and think there is a lot of potential for mixed drinks with this. We’ve made a hot toddy and it worked really well. If you’re looking for a great honey flavored bourbon, I think this is one you’ll enjoy.
